This October, we honored two exceptional athletes whose dedication and achievements have made a significant impact on and off the field this fall. Emma Van Ginkel ’25 embodies the essence of teamwork that defines field hockey. “I love how much field hockey requires a ‘we’ rather than a “me” mindset,” Emma said. “It is a team sport first and foremost; you cannot get down the field without your team, whether that be through strong communication or well-executed give-and-goes. I love that field hockey lets me leave everything else at the stadium gate and forces me to be present with my team on the field.”
As a standout defender and team leader, Emma's impact extended far beyond her on-field performance. "Emma has stood out on and off the field in so many ways," Coach Russell shared. "She is a very hardworking player who has led the team by example as one of the field hockey captains this past season. Her positive attitude was infectious, and she looked out for every player, keeping traditions from previous years alive."
For Tucker Marshall ’25, golf is not just a sport but a passion that connects him with nature and diverse courses around the world. “My favorite aspect of golf is being out in nature and having the opportunity to experience different golf courses,” Tucker said. “I have been fortunate to play golf in South Carolina, Ireland and right here in Northeast Ohio. Regardless of where I am playing, I always enjoy the beautiful scenery!”
Tucker’s dedication and skill came to fruition in a memorable victory this season. “My proudest moment of this year’s golf season was winning Firestone’s Charity Classic,” Tucker shared. “Playing alongside Coach Hadrys, former WRA Coach Evan Williams and my little brother Reid ’28, we secured the win by a couple of strokes and had a fantastic time on the course.”
Both Emma and Tucker exemplify the values of their respective programs through their dedication, sportsmanship and leadership. Emma’s unwavering commitment to teamwork and positivity, coupled with Tucker’s passion for the game and excellent season, have left a lasting impact on their teams and the WRA community.
We congratulate Emma and Tucker on their well-deserved recognition as our Pioneer Athletes of October!
