Without Reserve Copies Fly Off the Shelf

Essay authors sign copies of Without Reserve on Saturday afternoon of Homecoming Weekend.

Without Reserve, the school's newly published collection of 52 alumni essays, is selling at a rapid clip. The book, released in October at Homecoming Weekend, features works by Reserve's best-known authors, including R.W. Apple '52, Ted Gup '68 and Ian Frazier '69.

" I read the entire book on the flight back [from Homecoming Weekend]," said David Moran '65, a contributing essayist. "What an achievement! It adds immeasurably to the history of the school." Moran added, "There is a lot of powerful and touching material in it, I must say."

English faculty member Rich Hoffman selected three essays from the collection to feature during his October 28, 2005, Advisor-Advisee Assembly presentation in the Chapel. Later that day, the Campus Store saw a flurry of activity as faculty and students came through to purchase the book. However, the largest single purchase occurred late last month when an alumnus from the 1970s purchased copies as gifts for his entire class.

Do you have a student, cousin, uncle, grandparent or family friend who might enjoy a unique view of life at Reserve? Now might be the perfect time to purchase a copy of Without Reserve.

AAB Hosts Seniors at Annual Dinner

These seniors at the AAB's annual fall dinner are getting ready for a lively and competitive after-dinner game of Name That Tune.

Members of the Alumni Association Board hosted a group of “future alumni,” the Class of 2006, at a dinner on November 7. The Board has for several years taken the students to an area restaurant to begin to orient them to the idea that they will be alumni in just a few short months. AAB Vice President Inga Weimer Walker ’91 welcomed the students, and after a dinner of Marcelita’s finest Mexican food, members of the Alumni & Development Office led the group in a competitive "Name That Tune" contest.

Alumni Meet and Greet Across the Country

America’s colors may be red, white and blue, but a lot of green and white was also in evidence across the country this fall as WRA alumni from coast to coast got together at a variety of events.

The gatherings began in September in New York City with a reception hosted by Priscilla Vail Caldwell '81, who graciously opened the James Graham & Sons Gallery on Madison Avenue to a large alumni crowd. (Caldwell is the gallery's director for American paintings.) The next day, a women's luncheon was held at the Harvard Club.

On the West Coast, alumni get-togethers took place in San Francisco on September 27, Palo Alto on September 28 and Los Angeles the following day. The Alumni & Development Office staff then accumulated even more frequent flyer miles as they went to Philadelphia on October 6 for another cocktail reception and a young alumni dinner.

In Cleveland, 13 area alumnae met for lunch at The Union Club on November 9. The next day, the staff headed to Washington, D.C., for an alumni reception at the home of John '75 and Margarita Hewko, and on November 11, a young alumni dinner at a D.C. restaurant.

Rounding out the busy schedule were gatherings in Atlanta on November 17, in Chicago on December 1 and in the Cleveland area at the Chagrin Valley Hunt Club on December 8.

Visit the Recent Event Highlights page for event summaries and guest lists from these gatherings (Chagrin Valley Hunt Club information not yet available).

Homecoming Attracts Gastronomic, Sports and Literary Aficionados

There was something for everyone at Homecoming on October 1. For those among the 142 in attendance who came to eat, there was food aplenty at the noon picnic and post-game reception, both held in the lobby of the Murdough Athletic Center. For sports fans, there were the girls soccer game with Gilmour and the football game against Culver Military Academy. (By the way, the Pioneers were undefeated in football this year.) And for those seeking sentimental literary pursuits and the chance to rub elbows with both famous and not-so-famous authors, there was the official release of Without Reserve. Many of those whose essays appear in the book were on hand, along with the book's principal editor Jim Gramentine ’51, to autograph copies purchased by fellow alumni.
