Without Reserve: Submit Your Essay Today!
Plans are on schedule to publish a book of about 30 essays by alumni who attended Reserve for one or more years prior to 1983. To date, the editorial committee has received seven essays, and nine other potential authors have expressed serious interest. The deadline for submissions is June 30, 2004.
"I imagine there are dozens of other Pioneers out there considering this opportunity," suggests project chair Jim Gramentine '52. "Alumni with essay ideas should contact me for a short spec sheet explaining how to submit an article." Gramentine can be reached at 262-241-9317 or gramentine@aol.com.
"The only other preparatory school we know to have produced a book similar to Without Reserve is Phillips Exeter Academy. My classmate Johnny Apple has just promised us an essay," Gramentine adds, "but mostly we are counting on a lot of amateur hacks out there who love both good writing and Reserve."
Almost any aspect of student life could be the topic for a great essay; a coming of age incident, a faculty profile, dormitory culture, a personal epiphany, an academic or athletic challenge. "You name it," Gramentine says, "the possibilities are legion." Can't think of a topic? For a list of essay ideas, click here (pdf file format).
For alumni who attended Reserve after 1982, look for a second book of essays to be published at a later date. Perhaps it will be entitled, More Reserve.
Reunion Weekend 2004 - Save the Date!
Essays are not the only way Reserve lore is perpetuated. In fact, the reminiscing and telling and re-telling of stories at Reunion is probably the most common and effective way of preserving our history. And for those with stories to tell, Reunion Weekend is just around the corner: June 11-13, 2004. While this year's festivities will focus specifically on the classes ending in 4 and 9, all alumni are invited to attend any of the Reunion events. With a full slate of activities planned, and with the new athletic complex nearing completion, there will be plenty for all to see and do. The list of those planning to attend is already available online and will be updated weekly beginning next month.
In addition to the traditional Reunion Weekend schedule of events, the Alumni Association Board and other volunteers will hold the second annual Alumni Golf Outing at the Country Club of Hudson.
The event is scheduled for Friday, June 11, and will conclude well ahead of the evening's all-classes dinner at Ellsworth Hall. Details and online registration for the outing will be available shortly. Just visit the Reunion News & Events page and check for a Golf Outing information and registration link.
Construction Updates
The Reserve campus continues to be a construction - and destruction - zone. On the construction side of the ledger, the biggest project, of course, is the new athletic complex, which has risen on the site of the old football field. Please take a moment to view photos of construction progress over the past year. Concurrent with that project is the remodeling of the front part of Bicknell Gym into Bicknell House - a new dormitory space. The first floor of Ellsworth Hall is also being reconfigured to provide more efficient dining service for students and faculty.
The Ong Library was the site of involuntary destruction and subsequent restoration, thanks to a January 22nd break in a water pipe in the ceiling of the top floor. Fortunately, most of the library collection sustained little or no damage, but ceiling tiles, ceiling and floor moldings, carpeting, flooring, the lower floor computer labs, and other building features were damaged. Portions of the library have reopened and the school expects to finish all restoration work by mid-summer.
Finally, at this writing, the dismantling of the water tower is scheduled to occur this summer. The city-owned tower, which has stood watch over the campus since 1911, was declared unsafe by an engineering firm last year. Because the cost of repairs was prohibitive and the capacity was no longer needed, a decision was made to remove the deteriorating structure. History of the tower and its scheduled removal was the subject of a longer article in the May 2003 Alumni Association E-Newsletter.

Wanted - Dead or Alive
This Camera!
Do you have a camera collecting dust in a drawer or on a closet shelf? If so, it may be of value to Reserve's art department.
Photography teacher Alan Doe is looking for old 35 mm cameras and accessories, especially SLRs with inter-changeable lenses. "Those solid cameras from the sixties are great teaching tools," Alan says. Even non-working cameras would be appreciated.
If you have a camera to donate, please send Alan an e-mail at doea@wra.net.

Call for Nominations for the Morley Medal
The Morley Medal Committee is seeking nominations for the 2004 Morley Medal Award. The Morley Medal is a new award given to alumni who have gone on to distinguish themselves in a scientific field.
If you know of a qualified candidate, please contact Sue Ellen Steffens, Director of Alumni & Development, at steffenss@wra.net or 330-650-9703. The deadline for nominations is April 2, 2004.

Reserve: Then and Now
by Tom Vince, Archivist & Historian
Then: The senior class play in May of 1939 was Reserve '69, a musical revue supposedly set 30 years in the future and staged in Cutler Hall (now Ellsworth Hall). The scene shifted from Heaven to a barroom, and from a crossroads village to Manhattan. The "torch singer" was played by Julius Solomon, Jr. '39.
Now: In the fall of 2003, students presented Candide, performed in the Knight Fine Arts Center theater.
